Two Months of Growth and Learning at Definition Surveying

The past two months at Definition Surveying have been incredibly rewarding, marked by a diverse range of projects, invaluable learning opportunities, and memorable team-building experiences. These milestones have significantly accelerated my professional growth and deepened my appreciation for the supportive environment within the company. Below is a reflection on the highlights of this transformative period.

Diverse Projects and Technical Challenges

One of the major highlights during this time was participating in a variety of surveys, including boundary identification surveys, cadastral surveys and set out surveys. The wide range of projects have given me the opportunity to learn a variety of new skills.

Among the projects, each of them presented unique challenges, requiring meticulous planning and execution. These experiences not only deepened my technical knowledge but also enhanced critical problem-solving skills and attention to detail—qualities essential for any surveyor striving for precision and excellence. Overcoming these challenges has reinforced my confidence in handling complex tasks and delivering high-quality results.

Remote Mentorship and Skill Development

Through remote guidance, I benefited greatly from the expertise of my experienced colleagues, including Sheldon, Bede, and Jordan. Their mentorship covered a wide range of topics, from advanced data processing techniques in Civil 3D to field survey protocols. For instance:

  • Sheldon provided valuable advice on drafting and organising scheme plans, especially on easements and adjusting table scales to meet project requirements and the high standard our team sets.

  • Bede shared practical tips for managing discrepancies between fence lines and measured boundaries, offering insights into resolving these issues effectively and efficiently.

  • Jordan guided me through the intricacies of a CSD (Cadastral Survey Dataset) that is submitted to LINZ. This advice and guidance enhanced my ability to handle complex datasets with accuracy and confidence.

The Licensed Cadastral Surveyors detailed instructions and encouragement have been instrumental in refining my workflows and ensuring that the quality of my work consistently meets the highest standards.

Hands-On Training in Tauranga

Another milestone was my visit to the Tauranga office, where I advanced my proficiency in Civil 3D software under the mentorship of Kimi. The hands-on experience included processing as-built plans and analysing survey data. Additionally, fieldwork at water supply network upgrade sites provided a practical context for applying these skills. Observing Kimi demonstrate workflows and best practices enriched my understanding and offered practical insights that textbooks and manuals often cannot convey.

Beyond the technical training, the Tauranga team’s warm hospitality left a lasting impression. I had the opportunity to join their bi-weekly Mount Maunganui hikes, which provided breathtaking views and strengthened camaraderie with my colleagues. These hikes underscored the importance of work-life balance and the value of fostering both personal and professional connections within a team.

Memorable Team-Building Events

In November, the entire company came together for a team-building event in Christchurch, attending the Addington horse races on Cup Day. The day was filled with excitement, laughter, and camaraderie. This event offered a break from work, reinforcing the company’s commitment to maintaining a supportive and engaging culture. Sharing such moments with colleagues not only deepened our connections but also created an environment where collaboration and innovation thrive.

Personal Growth and Professional Passion

These experiences, combined with the diverse range of projects I’ve undertaken, have solidified my passion for surveying. Challenges like locating submerged marks during adverse weather or reconciling discrepancies in boundary surveys tested my resilience and problem-solving abilities. Each challenge became an opportunity to learn and grow, further fueling my enthusiasm for this profession.

Looking ahead, I am more determined than ever to continue learning and honing my skills. The supportive environment at Definition Surveying has been a cornerstone of my progress, providing the resources and mentorship needed to excel. The team’s willingness to share knowledge, celebrate achievements, and collaborate meaningfully fosters a culture where individuals and the organisation thrive together. It is truly a privilege to be part of a workplace where the people make all the difference.

Reflections and Aspirations

As I reflect on my journey so far, I am reminded of the importance of passion and perseverance. Enthusiasm is the foundation for success, and it is this passion that drives me to become a competent and exceptional surveyor. I am deeply grateful for the opportunities I’ve had so far and I look forward to embracing the challenges and achievements that lie ahead.
